Diabetes is a chronic disease associated with high sugar levels in the blood and nutrition is very integral in Diabetes management.

Diabetes is often thought to be a problem of carbohydrates alone however, the overall distribution and metabolism of fat, protein and even water intake are also to be considered.

There are different types of Diabetes

  1. Type 1 Diabetes usually is an autoimmune response where the body’s immune system destroys and attacks the body’s pancreas which is responsible for producing insulin.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes occurs as a result of the pancreas not producing a sufficient amount of insulin or the pancreas is producing a sufficient amount of insulin however the body cells are not responding effectively (Insulin resistance).
  3. Gestational Diabetes; This is a form of Diabetes that occurs during pregnancy due to an insufficient amount of insulin being produced by the pancreas.

For proper management of Diabetes, there are 4 lines of management

  1. Diet or Nutritional management.
  2. Diet/Nutrition and Exercise
